Prenatal Lactation Visit

(Assessment, Plan, Counseling)

  • Your prenatal lactation visit includes:

    • A review your health history, including family, medical, surgical, and prenatal history, with a focus on signs or conditions that can impact lactation.

    • A breast exam to assess for expected prenatal changes and/or signs of potential breastfeeding challenges.

    • Discussion of your feeding goals and home/work life.

    • Our visit and plan is based on our findings and tailored to fit you and your family’s needs.

    • Education and counseling on the early days of lactation and other related topics (tailored to your needs and knowledge base).

    • Generally 40-60 minutes

Lactation induction

(Lactation without pregnancy)

  • Lactation induction is the process of starting lactation without being pregnant, an option that some co-parents or adoptive parents wish to explore.

    At our visit we will:

    • Review your medical history, feeding goals, and expected timing of baby’s arrival

    • Discuss options for inducing lactation in the non-gestating (not pregnant) parent, and the range of results to expect.

    • Develop a personalized plan of care for lactation induction and infant feeding.

    • Generally this visit is 40-60 minutes.

    • Follow up visits to monitor progress, adjust the plan of care, and provide additional support. will be tailored as indicated.

Initial Lactation Visit

  • An initial lactation visit is tailored to your situation, goals, and needs. This often includes:

    • A review of your health history, if not previously done at a prenatal visit

    • A review of your birthing and postpartum experience thus far, including how feeding has been going

    • Breast assessment and assessment of your baby (including an oral exam, suck reflex and strength and pattern of suck)

    • Latch assessment and feeding observation .

    • Weighing the baby before and after a feeding, with a scale sensitive enough to estimate how much milk your baby took in.

    • Formulating a plan based on our findings, your family’s needs, and your feeding goals/preferences.

    • Generally 60-90 minutes

Follow up visits

  • A time to check in, reassess, and adjust the plan accordingly. Individually tailored to each situation and family, a follow up visit may include:

    • Reviewing feeding, pumping, and growth history since last visit

    • Checking in on how you’re feeling and if there are any changes in your schedule, needs, or goals that will guide our next steps.

    • Observing a feeding, weighing before and after to estimate how much baby is getting at each feed.

    • Reviewing or clarifying information from prior visits, or learning something new.

    • Length of visit tailored to the visit’s focus and family’s needs.

Telehealth Initial

  • Although in most cases an initial lactation assessment is best done in person, telehealth may be appropriate in some cases, for example:

    • Telehealth as a “part one” of other types of initial visits, with a full exam(s) deferred until an in person visit.

    • Focused discussion of a specific concern or topic, where an in-person exam is not needed urgently (or at all).

    • Generally 40-60 minutes.

Telehealth Follow up

    • Great for following up where no in-person assessment is needed, or for following up between in-person visits.

    • Generally 30-60 minutes but may be shorter or longer - length of visit tailored as appropriate depending on your needs and the reason for the visit.

Payment & Insurance for Lactation Visits

Dr. Hollander provides out-of-network quality care with almost in-network convenience.

Payment is due at the time of the visit, but payment plans are available through third-parties, so you won’t need to lay out the entire visit cost all at once.

Under the Affordable Care act, lactation visits may be covered by insurance 100%. If your insurance does not provide 100% coverage for a lactation visit with an out-of-network provider, they may provide partial reimbursement under your lactation benefits or other out-of-network coverage benefits, depending on your specific plan and deductible.

We can submit a “superbill” to your insurance on your behalf, so that the insurance will send the reimbursement check directly to you ~ making for a stress-free process, and helping you get paid back easily and efficiently.

See “Payment and Insurance” for more.

Home Visits

Home visits may be available, for an $80 fee, in Park Slope, Windsor Terrace, Prospect Heights, Gowanus, and Greenwood Heights. Home visit fees are not reimbursable by insurance.
